AB-900 Day One: A Safe Conditional Access and Intune Lab Blueprint for Copilot
1. Study log: start with access, not an imagined tenant build
For this first study entry, I am treating the lab as a design exercise—not claiming that I provisioned a Microsoft 365 tenant, created a policy, or tested a real device. The goal is to understand the relationship between identity decisions and device compliance before connecting those controls to a Copilot readiness plan.
The AB-900 study guide currently labels its skills as measured October 14, 2026. It weights core Microsoft 365 features and objects at 30–35%, data protection and governance at 35–40%, and basic Copilot and agent administration at 25–30%.[1] The credential page announces an English-version update on October 14, 2026, so check the study guide for the exam date you intend to take.[2]
| Default approach | AI-hardened study approach |
|---|---|
| Treat “Copilot access” as one license toggle. | Separate identity, device, data permission, and workload controls. |
| Test a broad policy against every user. | Model users, exclusions, device state, and recovery before enforcement. |
| Assume every device is compliant by default. | Define platform-specific compliance and a safe noncompliance path. |
| Call a policy “secure” after saving it. | Review scope, sign-in outcomes, exceptions, and rollback readiness. |
The study guide expects familiarity with Microsoft 365 security, identity and access, data protection, Copilot, and agents; this blueprint stays within those public objectives.[1]
2. Lab architecture and prerequisites
This is a reproducible lab plan. No tenant changes were made. Use a disposable test tenant and test identities if you execute it later; do not begin with production users.
Conceptual request path
Test user → Microsoft Entra sign-in → Conditional Access decision → device compliance signal (if targeted) → Microsoft 365 workload authorization
Conditional Access evaluates signals and policy conditions after first-factor authentication; it is an access decision layer, not a replacement for other defenses.[3] Intune compliance policies define platform-specific rules and can supply a compliance state used by Conditional Access.[4]
Prerequisite checklist
- Confirm a non-production tenant and documented owner.
- Identify one test user and one break-glass recovery identity; exclude recovery accounts deliberately and protect them separately.
- Confirm the licensing required for the intended Entra Conditional Access and Intune features in your tenant; entitlement varies by SKU. Do not assume Microsoft 365 E5 is required merely to study this workflow.
- Enroll a supported test device only if the lab includes device compliance; otherwise simulate the design on paper.
- Record the change owner, test window, support contact, and rollback trigger.
- Review current Microsoft documentation and the tenant’s own licensing terms before enabling paid or preview-dependent features.
Least privilege means the person designing the exercise should not receive standing Global Administrator rights just for convenience. Assign the smallest suitable administrative role, use just-in-time elevation where available, and require a second-person review for enforcement changes.
3. Implementation steps: design before enforcement
- Inventory the scenario. Write down the target cloud app, test identities, device platforms, expected sign-in locations, and support path. Keep the initial scope to a dedicated test group.
- Document recovery first. Verify that authorized emergency access accounts are monitored, excluded only where justified, and tested under your organization’s emergency-access procedure.
- Draft the device rule set. Choose only requirements the test device can meet, such as supported OS version or encryption, and define a user-facing remediation action. Intune evaluates compliance according to platform-specific policy settings.[4]
- Create a report-only access design. Specify the users/groups, cloud app, conditions, grant controls, and explicit exclusions. Start in report-only mode where supported; inspect the expected impact before enforcement.
- Test a matrix, not a single happy path. Include compliant device, noncompliant device, excluded emergency account, and out-of-scope user. Capture expected versus observed outcomes in the lab record.
- Review sign-in evidence. Confirm which policy applied, what device state was observed, and whether the result matches the intended boundary. Do not infer a Copilot permission defect from an identity-policy result alone.
- Obtain approval before enforcement. Require the service owner and identity/security reviewer to approve the exact target scope and change window.
- Enforce narrowly, then observe. Enable for the dedicated test group only. Expand scope only after help-desk readiness, recovery validation, and documented evidence.
- Rollback on defined triggers. Revert the policy to report-only/disabled or restore the last approved condition set if test identities are unexpectedly blocked, critical access fails, or recovery cannot be verified.
Policy creation, assignment, and enforcement are intentionally not performed by this article or its validation run.
4. Usable engineering deliverable: pre-enforcement change record
Copy this checklist into a change ticket and complete it with synthetic or approved test data. A blank or failed control blocks enforcement.
Change ID: ____________________ Tenant: NON-PRODUCTION / verified
Policy owner: __________________ Reviewer: _______________________
Target group: __________________ Cloud app: _____________________
Device platforms: ______________ Compliance rule version: ________
Emergency-access review: PASS / FAIL Help-desk ready: YES / NO
Test case Expected result Evidence ref
Compliant test device Allowed if all controls pass ____________
Noncompliant test device Blocked or remediated as scoped ____________
Excluded recovery account Outcome per approved procedure ____________
Out-of-scope test user Unchanged by this policy ____________
Approval: _____________________ Rollback owner: __________________
Rollback trigger: ______________ Rollback action: _________________
Enforcement authorized: YES / NO Change window: __________________
Idempotency and safety rule: treat the record as a gate, not an automation script. Re-running review must not silently widen group membership or duplicate policies. Any scope change creates a new reviewed version. No production write or secret is required to use this template.
5. Public-objective concepts to retain
- Authentication versus authorization: authentication establishes the sign-in context; Conditional Access uses signals and policy to control access after first-factor authentication.[3]
- Device state is an input, not a universal guarantee: Intune compliance is based on configured platform-specific rules; policy scope and noncompliance actions matter.[4]
- Identity access is not content permission: Conditional Access does not repair overshared SharePoint permissions or replace data-protection controls. Review each control at its own layer.
- Exam alignment: AB-900 covers core service objects and security, data protection/governance for Copilot, and basic Copilot/agent administration; the listed domain weights come from the current study guide.[1]
- Version awareness: the English credential page lists an October 14, 2026 update; re-open the official study guide before scheduling.[2]
This is objective-aligned study guidance, not a reproduction of protected exam questions.
6. Next step in the study journey
Next, I will move from access boundaries to the data-permission side of Copilot readiness: a read-only review plan for broadly shared SharePoint sites. The key distinction remains the same—design the control, test its scope, and preserve evidence before claiming that a tenant is hardened.
If you also own Windows provisioning in that tenant, run the free Pre-Check Lite today to check your Device Prep setup the same read-only way. The full Kit 1 is on presale at $39, with files by Dec 1 and a refund until 14 days after.
